Southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the mighty Mekong River fans out into a green labyrinth of rivers, canals and islands before spilling into the sea. This is the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s rice bowl and fruit basket, where life still moves to the rhythm of the water. Floating markets, coconut groves, stilt houses and sampans gliding beneath dense palms make a Mekong Delta day trip one of the most rewarding escapes from the city — and an overnight stay reveals an even richer, slower world beyond the tour-boat crowds.
Why visit the Mekong Delta
The delta is a vast agricultural heartland fed by the Mekong’s nutrient-rich silt. Here you can drift along palm-fringed canals, sample tropical fruit straight from the orchard, watch coconut candy being made, cycle past emerald paddies and share a home-cooked meal with a delta family. It is a landscape defined by water, and the best way to experience it is from the deck of a boat.
Key destinations
The delta is large, and different towns offer different experiences. Choosing where to go depends on how much time you have.
- My Tho — the closest delta town to Ho Chi Minh City and the backbone of most one-day tours, known for its riverine islands and boat trips.
- Ben Tre — the celebrated coconut kingdom, quieter than My Tho, laced with small canals perfect for sampan rides and famous for coconut candy workshops.
- Can Tho — the largest city in the delta and the gateway to its most famous floating market; a natural base for an overnight trip.
- Cai Be and Vinh Long — a scenic area of orchards, riverside workshops and homestays, popular for cycling and cooking.
- Sa Dec — a charming town of flower gardens and old colonial-era architecture, associated with the French novelist Marguerite Duras.
- Chau Doc — near the Cambodian border, known for its floating fish farms, Sam Mountain and Cham communities, and a common crossing point for boats to Phnom Penh.
Floating markets
The delta’s floating markets are its signature spectacle, where wholesalers gather on the water to trade produce boat to boat, each hanging a sample of its wares from a tall pole.
- Cai Rang — the largest and most famous floating market, near Can Tho, busiest in the early morning when trading is in full swing. Reaching it by boat around dawn is the classic delta experience.
Things to do
- Sampan rides — small hand-paddled boats slip down narrow, shaded canals that larger craft cannot reach, one of the delta’s most peaceful pleasures.
- Homestays — staying with a delta family in a traditional house offers home-cooked meals, orchard walks and a genuine glimpse of rural life.
- Cycling — flat lanes winding between rice paddies, fruit orchards and villages make the delta wonderful for gentle bike rides.
- Cooking and craft workshops — learn to prepare local dishes, watch rice paper and rice wine being made, or see coconut candy pulled and wrapped by hand.
- Fruit orchards and tropical produce — sample the delta’s abundance, from rambutan and longan to durian and pomelo, often paired with traditional music.
Day trip or overnight?
A one-day tour from Ho Chi Minh City typically focuses on My Tho and Ben Tre, with a river cruise, a sampan ride, a coconut candy workshop and a fruit-and-music stop — a satisfying taste of the delta, though a long day with several hours on the road. To reach the Cai Rang floating market at its best, an overnight trip to Can Tho is far better, since the market is liveliest at dawn. Two or more days allow you to slow down, stay in a homestay and explore further-flung towns like Chau Doc and Sa Dec.
How to get there
The delta lies southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. My Tho is the nearest gateway, reachable in roughly one and a half to two hours by road, while Can Tho is further, around three to four hours away by highway. Most visitors travel on an organised tour with transport and a guide included, though private cars and buses also serve the main towns. Within the delta, boats are the essential mode of transport for reaching islands, canals and floating markets.
Best time to visit
The delta can be visited year round thanks to its tropical climate. The drier months from roughly December to April bring the most reliable weather, while the rainy season sees more frequent downpours but lush green landscapes. The period around late summer and autumn is often associated with the floating water season, when parts of the delta brim with water and certain regional produce is at its peak. Whenever you visit, start early to catch the floating markets and the cool of the morning.
Insider tips
- To truly experience a floating market, set out by boat at or before dawn, when trading is busiest and the light is beautiful.
- Consider an overnight stay to escape the day-tripper crowds and see the delta at its most authentic.
- Bring sun protection, insect repellent and a hat, as much of your time is spent on open water.
- Carry small denominations of cash for snacks, fruit and boat vendors.
- Choose a smaller-group or homestay-based tour for a more personal, less rushed experience.
From the bustle of Cai Rang to the hush of a coconut-shaded canal, the Mekong Delta offers a side of Vietnam shaped entirely by water. Whether you come for a quick day trip or a leisurely few days among the orchards and homestays, it leaves a lasting impression of a region where the river truly is life.
