Poised on Vietnam’s central coast between the imperial city of Hue and the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, Da Nang is the country’s most liveable beach city and the perfect base for exploring the region. It pairs a long ribbon of golden sand with dramatic mountains, quirky bridges and the mist-wrapped resort of Ba Na Hills. Whether you crave seafood on the beach, temple caves or the famous Ba Na Hills Golden Bridge, Da Nang rewards every kind of traveller with easy access and effortless charm.
Top highlights
Da Nang’s appeal lies in how much it packs into a compact, walkable footprint. In a single day you can swim at dawn, ride a cable car into the clouds and watch a bridge breathe fire at night.
- My Khe Beach — a sweeping stretch of soft sand running for kilometres along the city’s eastern edge, ideal for swimming, sunrise walks and fresh seafood at the palm-shaded eateries behind it.
- Dragon Bridge (Cau Rong) — a golden dragon-shaped bridge spanning the Han River and the city’s signature landmark. On Saturday and Sunday evenings it puts on a show, breathing real fire and jets of water.
- Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) — a cluster of five marble and limestone hills riddled with caves, tunnels and Buddhist shrines. Climb to viewpoints or descend into atmospheric grottoes lit by shafts of daylight.
- Son Tra Peninsula — the forested headland north of the city, home to the towering Lady Buddha statue at Linh Ung Pagoda and troops of rare red-shanked douc langurs.
Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge
No visit is complete without a day trip to Ba Na Hills, a French-built hill station set high in the mountains west of the city. One of the world’s longest and highest non-stop cable-car systems whisks you up through the forest to a cool, cloud-brushed summit that feels a world away from the coastal heat.
The star attraction is the Ba Na Hills Golden Bridge (Cau Vang), a curving golden walkway seemingly held aloft by two enormous weathered stone hands. Since opening in 2018 it has become one of Vietnam’s most photographed sights. Beyond the bridge you’ll find the whimsical French Village with its cobbled square and cathedral, ornate gardens, a wax museum and the Fantasy Park indoor amusement centre. Arrive early to beat both the crowds and the afternoon mist.
Things to do
- Drive or ride the Hai Van Pass, a spectacular mountain road winding over the coast toward Hue, with sweeping ocean views and old French and American-era bunkers at the summit.
- Cross the river to explore the buzzing night markets and riverside cafes, then catch the Dragon Bridge fire show.
- Take a cooking class or feast on local specialities like mi Quang noodles and banh xeo pancakes.
- Relax at a beach club or learn to surf during the calmer months.
Day trips
Da Nang’s location makes it the ideal springboard for two of central Vietnam’s greatest treasures. Hoi An, the beautifully preserved trading port famed for its lantern-hung old town, tailors and riverside ambience, lies roughly 30 kilometres south and makes an easy half-day or evening excursion. Inland, the My Son Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage cluster of ancient Cham brick temples set in a jungle valley, offering a fascinating glimpse into a Hindu civilisation that flourished for centuries. Both are within comfortable reach by taxi, private car or organised tour.
Best time to visit
The most pleasant window runs from around February to May, when skies are generally clear, humidity is bearable and the sea is calm for swimming. June to August brings intense heat and peak domestic tourism but reliably sunny beach days. The wetter months from roughly September to December can see heavy rain and occasional typhoons, so check forecasts if travelling late in the year.
How to get there
Da Nang International Airport sits just minutes from the city centre and receives domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City plus a growing number of international connections. The scenic Reunification Express railway links Da Nang with Hue, Hanoi and Saigon, and the coastal stretch to Hue is one of the most beautiful train journeys in the country. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and rental scooters make getting around simple.
Insider tips
Base yourself near My Khe Beach for the best of both worlds — sand on your doorstep and the city a short ride away. Visit Ba Na Hills as early as possible, as clouds often roll in by midday and queues build fast. Time your city stay to include a weekend so you can watch the Dragon Bridge fire show, and always agree on a fare or use an app for taxis. Pack layers for the mountains, where temperatures at Ba Na Hills and along the Hai Van Pass are noticeably cooler than on the coast.
